11 August 2023
The autumn of 2023 will see an increase in the statutory planning application fees to be charged by local councils when applications are submitted. Regulations are currently being considered by the Government that will see submission costs increasing this year – and beyond. The principal changes are:
• A 25% increase for most types of planning applications.
• Increases rising to 35% for applications classified as ‘major’. This includes residential applications of 10+ dwellings and commercial applications for more than 1,000m2 floor space.
• The abolition of the ‘free go’ whereby an application could be submitted for nothing within 12 months of a previous refusal.
• Thereafter, a yearly increase in line with inflation, subject to a 10% cap.
The Draft Regulations are expected to be adopted following the MP’s return to Parliament on the 4th September, and then in force 28 days later.
The fee increases are intended to help Councils increase resources and employ extra staff.
