Upcoming Changes To Planning Appeals
The Government has announced changes to the written representation planning appeal process whereby ‘expedited’ proceedings are being introduced in an attempt to speed up decision making. The changes mean that appellants will not be required to provide full Statements of Case. A planning inspector will decide an appeal on the same basis as the refused planning application.
Goadsby Planning Director Peter Atfield states:
“In January 2022 the Minister of State for Housing had ambitions for the Planning Inspectorate to determine appeals in 4-8 weeks, although in practice the actual target then was 16-20 weeks. However, the figures for Q4 2024-2025 show an average determination period of 29 weeks. This is appalling, so whatever can be done to shorten the process has to be welcomed.”
