Increase in Planning Application Fees

From the 1st April, local authority planning application fees will be increasing by 1.7%. The increase is in line with the Consumer Price Index 12-month rate for September 2024. This only represents a small increase at this time, for example with change of use applications increasing by £10.00 to £588.00.

However, in the longer term, councils will be able to set their own fees to cover the entire costs of their planning service. This could see substantial increases that will be particularly hard-hitting for major applications – those over 1 hectare or with a floor area in excess of 1,000 m2.

We are advising clients to prepare planning applications as early as possible to minimise this additional cost exposure on what is an already expensive process.
