Falling Short of Government Housing Targets
When the Labour Government came to power two years ago, it set itself an ambition target of constructing 1.5m homes over 5 years – 300,000 per annum. So how is it doing? Well, not too good actually. Based on EPC placements, completions to this week from July 2025 amount to 392,400 – less than 2/3rds of the target. Delivery will have to be substantially increased for the manifesto pledge to be fulfilled.
Locally, the development of new houses continues at a slow pace, with BCP and Dorset Council delivering an annual average of 372 and 1,254 homes respectively since their formation in 2019. Goadsby Director of Town Planning, Peter Atfield comments, “This low level of supply restricts choice and impairs affordability, particularly for young people looking to get on, and progress through, the housing market.”
